A Strong Domestic Year for Hamilton Halton Brant: 2025 Visitor Report Now Available

The 2025 Hamilton Halton Brant Visitor Report is now available. Based on Environics Analytics VisitorView data, the report provides data on Canadian and U.S. overnight visitation across the Hamilton Halton Brant region.

Strong Domestic Overnight Visitation

The Canadian market drove the region’s overnight visitation in 2025, outperforming the province and reaching its strongest levels in the four years of available data.

  • The region welcomed 4.3 million Canadian overnight visitors, who took 8.3 million overnight trips and stayed 13.1 million nights — up 23.5 percent, 24.1 percent, and 9.7 percent respectively, and a reversal following declines in 2023 and 2024.
  • Hamilton Halton Brant’s growth in Canadian overnight visitors, number of trips, and total nights spent outpaced the Ontario average; the region’s 9.7 percent growth in total nights spent was second only to the Greater Toronto Area among Ontario’s 15 tourism regions.
  • The domestic growth was concentrated in overnight visits from the Ontario market which supplied nearly nine of every ten Canadian nights — reflecting a year of stronger short-haul, drive-to travel. Toronto remained the largest single origin market, generating 2.5 million nights.
  • Overall, domestic growth came from more frequent, slightly shorter overnight stays, with the average night stay decreasing from 3.4 to 3.0 nights per visitor.

U.S. Overnight Visitation Down

The U.S. overnight market softened in 2025 amid economic uncertainty, exchange-rate movements, and Canada–U.S. trade and political tensions, though the region held its position among Ontario’s leading destinations for American visitors.

  • U.S. overnight trips fell 8.8 percent and total nights declined 6.9 percent year over year.
  • The region recorded 399.6K U.S. overnight trips and 1.9 million total nights, and ranked fourth in Ontario tourism regions for nights spent by U.S. visitors.

Seasonal and Multi-Year Trends

  • Summer remained the peak season for overnight stays. Spring posted the largest gain of any season, up 16.7 percent, and fall also grew, while winter was the only season to lose nights.
  • Overnight visitation from domestic markets turned upward in 2025 after two years of decline, with number of visitors and trips both reaching four-year highs and nights recovering to their 2022 level of 13.1 million.
  • Length of stay by domestic visitors declined from 3.3 nights in 2022 to 3.0 nights in 2025, pointing to shorter, more frequent visits.
  • After rising in 2023 and 2024, U.S. overnight nights declined in 2025 and returned to their 2023 level of 1.9 million.

The 2025 Visitor Report covers Canadian and U.S. overnight visitors only. Data on international overnight visitors and same-day visitors will become available this fall and will be included in future editions of this report.
