Black Tourism 'Spark' Announcement

Tourism Innovation is thrilled to announce the winners of our Black Tourism “Spark” Program, an initiative designed to foster diversity and innovation in Ontario’s tourism sector. The program, developed in partnership with SWOBEN, Empowerment Squared, and WE Tech Alliance, supports Black entrepreneurs and organizations in bringing creative tourism experiences to life in Ontario’s Southwest and Hamilton Halton Brant regions.

Following a competitive selection process, three visionary projects have been chosen to receive comprehensive support packages, including mentorship, seed funding, and technical assistance:

SenFaRa: Where Flavors, Culture, and Community Converge

Founded by siblings Osen, Lohifa, and Era Pogoson, SenFaRa will be a vibrant café and social house in Hamilton, Ontario. This innovative concept promises to blend global flavors with local community connection, offering a space where culinary arts, music, and culture intersect. The name SenFaRa, combining “Sense,” “Flavor,” and “Roots,” embodies their vision of being “Globally Infused and Authentically Local.”

Journeys Through Time

Led by Terri Bedminster and Aaron Perry of the Hamilton Black History Council, this project will create engaging experiences that showcase Hamilton’s rich Black history and cultural heritage. The initiative aims to connect visitors with the important stories and contributions of the local Black community.

The Blaze of Story Road Show

Led by Teajai Travis, founder of Sacred Story Studio, this mobile storytelling initiative will bring engaging narratives to communities from Windsor to Chatham. Building on the success of “A Blaze of Story” series, this project aims to develop storytelling infrastructure across the region, culminating in a storytelling festival planned for 2028.

Each winning project will receive:

  • Three months of tailored mentorship with industry experts
  • $3,000 in seed funding for development activities
  • $2,000 in technology adoption support and advisory services
  • Access to an extensive network of tourism innovators and leaders

The “Spark” Program continues to build a vibrant community of tourism innovators, fostering new experiences that make Ontario’s tourism sector more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

Destination Canada Launches New Traveller Segmentation Program

The Traveller Segmentation Program defines and classifies travelers from Destination Canada’s key target markets—both international and domestic—into seven key segments based on a combination of behavioural values—like trip spend, travel frequency, seasonal preferences and activities—and psychographic factors such as emotional motivations and core travel values.

Transformational Travel Design Program (TTDP)

Shaping the Future of Tourism Experiences

Made possible through funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev), RTO3 – Hamilton Halton Brant has partnered with the Transformational Travel Council to empower qualified tourism operators in developing innovative, sustainable experiences. Under the leadership of Bev Scott, Manager, Business & Visitor Experiences Development, this intensive program launched in late fall 2024, combining in-person training sessions with ongoing support to guide operators in creating purpose-led experiences that align with destination sustainability principles. 

The Transformational Travel Design Program helps operators develop experiences that go beyond traditional tourism offerings, focusing on meaningful connections with people, places, and cultures. These sustainable, thoughtfully designed experiences will be ready for consumers in 2025, enhancing our region’s competitive edge while supporting our commitment to responsible tourism development. The program’s emphasis on creating experiences that benefit both visitors and local communities while preserving our natural and cultural assets directly supports our broader sustainability goals. 

What is Transformational Travel?

Transformational travel is about creating deeper, more meaningful connections between travelers and the places they visit. It encourages visitors to engage with a destination’s history, culture, and environment while fostering personal growth and purposeful travel. 

For the Hamilton Halton Brant region, transformational travel is closely tied to Destination Sustainability. By embracing sustainable tourism practices, operators can create experiences that inspire travelers, protect natural and cultural resources, benefit local communities, and support long-term economic growth. 

The Transformational Travel Design Program (TTDP) was developed to empower tourism operators to align their products with these principles, ensuring that tourism in our region remains innovative, impactful, and sustainable. 

About the Program 

Launched in Fall 2024, the TTDP provided tools and training to help operators design purpose-led experiences that cater to today’s conscious travelers. Developed in partnership with the Transformational Travel Council and supported by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, this program emphasized innovation, sustainability, and collaboration. 

  • Inspiring Innovation: Operators learned to create meaningful experiences that encourage travelers to explore with intention and engage deeply with the destination. 
  • Practical Learning: The 5-week intensive program combined: 
  • Field Experiences: Hands-on opportunities to apply transformational travel techniques. 
  • Expert Guidance: Virtual sessions facilitated by the Transformational Travel Council to exchange ideas and strategies. 
  • Systems and Sustainability Coaching: Tools to design impactful, sustainable tourism offerings. 
  • Capstone Projects: Each participant developed a unique, market-ready experience tailored to their business or community, with ongoing support from RTO3. 

Key Features of TTDP 

  • Visitor-Centered Development: Participants created experiences that foster deeper engagement and meaningful connections. 
  • Sustainability Focus: Operators integrated stewardship principles into their offerings, ensuring alignment with RTO3’s commitment to sustainable tourism. 
  • Collaboration and Support: The program facilitated collaboration among operators while providing the tools and resources needed for long-term success. 

2024 TTDP Progress Updates 

The 2024 TTDP brought together 14 exceptional tourism operators, each of whom developed innovative offerings that align with transformational travel principles. We are excited to share progress updates on the incredible work these participants have done as they bring their projects to market.

Destination Canada Announces Four New Tourism Corridors

Destination Canada has announced the launch of four new tourism corridors for 2024, building on the success of last year’s pilot Tourism Corridor Strategy Program.

The Tourism Corridor Strategy Program aims to contribute to a more resilient tourism industry through accelerated destination development of multiple corridors across Canada.This program crosses provincial and territorial boundaries, bringing together tourism organizations to develop iconic new journeys for travellers to explore. This program is a key initiative of Destination Canada’s 2030 Tourism Strategy with its bold goal to propel Canada back into the Top 7 global tourism destinations.

The new tourism corridors are:

1. Cycle Ontario and Quebec (Ontario, Quebec)

This corridor will connect existing bike routes within Ottawa, Cornwall and Montreal and develop new routes in collaboration with local organizations to highlight tourism offerings.

Cycle Ontario and Quebec will connect local businesses, artisans, and Indigenous groups, ensuring the benefits of tourism reach everyone involved.

The corridor will offer accessible year-round routes, bike-friendly amenities, and opportunities for physical activity, all while promoting mental wellness and reducing environmental impact.

Cycling tourism is growing in Canada and represents significant potential. According to data from Velo Quebec, cycling tourism in Quebec produces:

  • $700 million annually in tourist spending
  • Over 7,000 jobs which are related to cycling tourism
  • 1.6 million nights which include cycling during the stay
  • 700,000 tourists stays with cycling activity

2. Field to Fork: Saskatchewan Manitoba Agritourism (Saskatchewan, Manitoba) 

As one of the largest and most productive agriculture regions in the world, Manitoba and Saskatchewan are primed to become global agritourism leaders.

As Destination Canada’s first-ever corridor that includes a culinary focus, Field to Fork will be developed with support from the Culinary Tourism Alliance with major gateway cities including: Winnipeg, Brandon, Saskatoon and Regina.

Visitors can gain a greater understanding and awareness of where our food comes from in Canada through farm-to-table culinary experiences, educational workshops, Indigenous agritourism and festivals. Agritourism also provides an opportunity for those attending business related meetings or conventions to learn about industrial processes, their impact on society and the environment, and their role in shaping the economy.

Destination Canada’s research underscores that trying local food and drink is the most frequently desired travel activity among global travellers (Global Traveller Research Program 2023).

3. Northern Sky Corridor (Alberta, Northwest Territories)

This corridor connects Edmonton, Alberta as the gateway to the Northwest Territories, celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage, art, and experiences set amongst expansive natural beauty.

This corridor connects to Canada’s north, where the demand for experiences exceeds supply. The development of this corridor will identify product gaps, explore transportation partnerships, and identify infrastructure needs to support the creation of new itineraries.

According to Destination Canada’s 2023 Global Traveller Research Program: 67.7% of international travelers to Canada are very interested in experiencing an Indigenous cultural experience or tourism activity in Canada.

4. Juan de Fuca Corridor (British Columbia, Washington State, USA)

This corridor area is a partnership with the Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER), which focuses on increasing economic well-being and quality of life for residents while maintaining and enhancing the natural environment.

Juan de Fuca Corridor capitalizes on destination development strategies that have been completed and focused on required investment for future attraction and resiliency.

This is the first corridor to cross into the United States, offering new opportunities to engage with Canada’s largest international market.

The US is Canada’s largest international market. In 2025, 16.2 million travellers from the US are expected to visit Canada and spend $13.7 billion, according to Destination Canada’s 2024 USA Market Highlights.

The Tourism Corridor Strategy Program will enhance Canada’s appeal by providing visitors with compelling reasons to explore new regions, thereby strengthening Canada’s tourism sector.

The selected corridors are defined as high-potential and align with criteria such as:

Identifying potential job opportunities

  • Potential for Indigenous inclusion or partnerships
  • Employing a regenerative approach
  • Engaging local communities
  • Supporting economic growth
  • Catalyzing investment attraction

“Tourism contributes to the wealth and wellbeing of all of Canada and community is at the heart of the Tourism Corridor Strategy Program. Alongside our regional partners, we work directly with local, grassroots organizations to create long-term destination development strategies, and identify the products, services, workforce, access, infrastructure and experiences required to both delight visitors and enrich the lives of locals,” said Marsha Walden,” President and CEO, Destination Canada.

“To stay competitive, Canada needs exceptional travel itineraries and experiences that reflect the essence of our country. To create them, we must attract strategic investments — from the private sector and all levels of government — that grow tourism in alignment with the interests of travelers and communities’ broader goals.”

‘The Grand, from Source to Mouth’ Documentary Film Premiere Event

On Saturday, June 17, 2023, in collaboration with Discover Brantford, Six Nations Tourism, and County of Brant Tourism, Hamilton Halton Brant Regional Tourism Association supported the premiere event of a documentary film and film maker, Thomas Ostapchuk and his 2023 film, ‘The Grand’. 

The film premiere event took place in Brantford’s downtown core, at Harmony Square which naturally showcase the proximity of the river to downtown amenities and experiences. Locals and visitors were invited by Discover Brantford event team, Kara Davey, Tia Chisholm and Jillian Page, to come to the square, dine, explore the displays by outfitters, Grand River Rafting Company and Grand Experiences Outdoor Adventure Company; and Two Row on the Grand, the Community Play Project – Dragonfly installation, and tourism information booths for prefilm festivities. 

Filmmaker, Thomas Ostapchuk was on site to share his paddle journey that began in Dufferin Highlands, Dundalk, Ontario – the source, to the mouth of the river in Port Maitland at Lake Erie. His inspiring and emotional quest demonstrated his personal determination to find and explore adventure in Southern Ontario. 

The geography of the river in Hamilton Halton Brant is in the County of Brant, City of Brantford, Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations. Considered the middle section of the river, a joint investment initiative to support the film, by RTOs 6, 4, 3, and 1 demonstrated our collaborative efforts to work as a watershed development collective.  

The filming of the project was made in early May 2022, and this project was identified as an important Grand River development initiative, further building on the opportunity to provide regional partners access to a visual story of the Grand River. The clear objective continues to  help provide an appreciation to learn and experience the river from a film maker’s personal perspective, driving outdoor enthusiasts to dip a paddle in our Canadian Heritage River. 

The 20-minute film follows Tom Ostapchuk on his self-supported journey to kayak the 300-kmlong Grand River. Fighting for his dreams and searching for his place in the world, he finds the courage and determination to push beyond his limits. The film documents the eight-day expedition testing his determination and stamina as he faces white water rapids, long days of paddling, and isolation with his thoughts. Along the way, he meets passionate paddlers who share their words and wisdom to guide his journey.  

A special appreciation and acknowledgement to the regional partners featured in the film-  a story-telling paddle by Jamie Kent, Grand Experiences and Ellie Joseph, Two Row on the Grand. The film also included Tom’s overnight stay at Chiefswood Park Cabins, a much appreciated complimentary cabin accommodation, and as a benefit, featured exterior and interior shots of one of the beautiful rustic pine cabins. 

With the weather co-operating on a lovely June evening, the event was well-attended by locals. We wish to thank you all of the regional partners for a successful collaboration and collective representation of river experiences and projects.
